Deliver your message with a podcast

What is a podcast?
In the simplest terms, a podcast is an audio file or series of audio files that can be shared with others.

You can subscribe to a podcast in much the same way as you subscribe to an email newsletter. The “author” or “broadcaster” records an audio file on a given topic and places it on a server where it can be accessed by “subscribers”.

Podcasts that you have subscribed to are then automatically downloaded to your computer or MP3 player when new content is made available. This is done using an RSS feed. Read the rest of this entry »

The Lifecycle of Web sites – is your site living or dead?

I often get asked “how often should my Web site be updated?” and “does this affect my sites search engine ranking?”

The simple answer (in general terms) is that small updates should be completed at least every 1-3 months to keep your site current and a complete overhaul should be done approximately every 3-4 years. And “yes” it is true that many search engines hold Web sites in higher regard the more often they are changed, updated
or added to.

So what’s the long answer you may ask?! Read the rest of this entry »

Useful online tools for brainstorming

What is brainstorming?

A way to generate lots of ideas on a specific challenge or issue and then determine which idea(s) is the best solution.  Typically you might grab a pen and paper and write down your own ideas first then you might share them with another individual or group to compare ideas and add any more that come to mind.  Another way to do this is write each idea on a post-it note and post them on a wall.

If you’re in the early stages of starting an online business and have lots of ideas but no direction or you are having trouble coming up with new ideas.  It may be useful to find an effective brainstorming tool to help you develop ideas and get them out of your head. Read the rest of this entry »

The Sunny Shack sells sunglasses on eBay

This week I had the opportunity to interview Trevor Storey from The Sunny Shack.  The Sunny Shack sells new brand name sunglasses online and stock brands such as Oakley, Ray Ban, Spy Optic, Von Zipper, Sabre, Dior, Gucci, and Prada.  Trevor started selling on eBay in late 2006 just as a hobby but as sales increased so did stock levels and his interest in growing it further.  Selling sunglasses quickly went from a bit of fun to a business with promise. It is now Trevor’s full time job and has been since mid 2009.  The Sunny Shack now has a website as well as selling via eBay but they are purely an e-tailer and do not sell offline.
